I was watching the movie Alien and when they explore that strange planet, I wondered in my head if you can do stuff like that in Eve Online? Or is it all spaceship battles?

Is there a steep learning curve? I'm coming from WoW...but looking for something different. I don't mind a time-consuming game...but a super complex game might be thought to break into? Regardless, this game looks intriguing.
